Basic Information about Femara Letrozole
Femara, sold under the brand name Femara, is a prescription drug used to treat breast cancer in its advanced stages, and in women who have finished menopause. Doctors may use Femara off-label in fertility treatments to help encourage egg release (ovulation) in women. Femara belongs to a class of cancer drugs known as aromatase inhibitors, which work by preventing the body from converting a hormone called androgen into estrogen.

Functions of Femara Letrozole
Letrozole is used for treating postmenopausal women with breast cancer. The growth of some breast cancers in postmenopausal women is promoted by estrogens that circulate in the blood, and the adrenal glands are the main source of these circulating estrogens. Letrozole inhibits the enzyme in the adrenal glands (aromatase) that produces the estrogens, estradiol and estrone. Letrozole was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Relationship between Femara Letrozole and Tamoxifen
Tamoxifen is also used to treat hormonally-responsive breast cancer, but it does so by interfering with the estrogen receptor. However, letrozole is effective only in post-menopausal women, in whom estrogen is produced predominantly in peripheral tissues (i.e. in adipose tissue, like that of the breast) and a number of sites in the brain. In pre-menopausal women, the main source of estrogen is from the ovaries not the peripheral tissues, and letrozole is ineffective.
In the BIG 1-98 Study, of post-menopausal women with hormonally-responsive breast cancer, letrozole reduced the recurrence of cancer, but did not change survival rate, compared to tamoxifen.
